DIY Pin and Thread Art – Teal Home Decor

What you need

The materials you will need to create this DIY pin and thread art are: scissors, a hammer, small sized nails, anchor threads (colours of your choice), white pen, a print out of the image or word you want to create and a piece of wood which you can either paint or polish.

Now I choose an image of a mannequin with a dress silhouette, after all this is a fashion blog and I am in love with Fashion. I also thought that it would work best for my room as it was something of my interest done creatively.

Step One 

With your scissors cut around the outline of the image you have selected, once it is cut place it onto the wood board and trace around it with a white pen.

Step Two 

Now that you have your traced outline on the wood board, with a measuring tape or by estimate mark 1/2 inch points all along the image. On each of these points begin to hammer in those nails, place the nail on the point and slightly hammer onto the nail, once you feel it has been set hit it strongly once or twice to make sure the nails are placed in tightly. If this is your first time and are bit scared you can also wear gloves if you have them for safety.

Step Three

The tough part is over and the fun part begins. Start using you threads, I decided to use an ivory coloured anchor thread with obviously my favourite, Teal. For my image I choose to start working on the big part first which was the flare of the skirt and as I wanted Teal to be more of the prominent colour in the end I used Ivory as the base colour to give it some dimension. I started working from the corners, you first need to make a knot on one of the nails and then the easiest way is to take it to the nail that is diagonally opposite it. To be honest once you start threading around you start experimenting and you can see for yourself what is looking the best, there are no exact rules to follow. This is the first time I gave it a shot to and I just kept going as long as it looked nice. I completed one diagonal round of the Ivory and then created around round exactly the same way but just in the opposite direction.

Step 4 

It was now time to use the Teal coloured thread, I started filling over the Ivory making some parts dark and some light to create a nice effect to it. With the Teal as while I was experimenting I took the thread from the flare straight up to the body connecting the two together instead of treating the body as a separate part.

Step Five 

The main part is done, just a little left! The legs of the mannequin were left for me and after looking it how the whole thing was coming together I noticed it was created a sort of ombre look from Teal to Ivory. This is why I choose to create the legs mainly out of Ivory and added just a tint of the teal over it to make it blend nicely.

Finishing Touches 

It’s done! Well almost, all you need to do now is cut all the extra threads that are hanging from the different knots created. Also some of the nails might have started to become a little loose as they have been pulled on, so with your hammer just hit the nails that seem loose. Now you are done, depending on the type of board you have and how it is looking take a decision if you want to get it framed or not. My board was not too appealing and was a very thin piece of wood too so I got mine framed and I think it looks beautiful! It took a couple of hours and this was what came out of my Sunday, go ahead give it a try and create some nice decor for your house!
