The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, unveiled in April enters into the world of beauty by a company known for fans and vacuum cleaners. Dyson is aiming to end everyone’s bad hair days with the launch of his first ever hairdryer – Supersonic. Four years ago, Dyson’s New Product Innovation team started buying human hair, and by the time all the test and experiments were done they had used around 1,000 miles of human hair. Dyson doesn’t do half-hearted product development and testing on human hair was essential to get the device ready for the market and four years after its conception it is ready by the British electronics company.
“Like everyone we get frustrated by products that don’t work properly. As design engineers we do something about it. We’re all about invention and improvement.”

               

The Supersonic has all the design hallmarks of a Dyson: it’s all circular and smooth, metallic with a splash of loud colour the best part is that it is so small as well easy to carry while travelling. It looks very good and nothing like a traditional dryer, for starters it has a hole in the middle which gives it a very sleek and futuristic appearance. 

The dryer has controlled air flow and heat which will not exceed 150 degrees whereas current hair dryers reach 230 degrees and they have these genius magnetic nozzle attachment so that they don’t fall off.

The Supersonic features Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology, which uses a motor and tiny jets to blow air rather than big ones. We all know how the heat from our hair dryers causes our hair to be dry and damages it, but with the Supersonic because of Dyson’s new digital motor-V9 this won’t be a problem. It has heat sensors built in next to the airflow jets that take the air’s temperature 20 times per second and it sends that data to a built-in microprocessor. So if the temperature does rise too much, the Supersonic will level it out on it own, which means hair will be healthier, shinier and sleeker than ever.
The Supersonic has a high speed 13-blade motor that is small enough to fit in the base of the hair dryer handle, rather than the conventional motor position at the top of the device. This small motor allows for high velocity flow but not pressure, the pressure is was causes users to burn themselves if the dryer is too close to the head with a traditional hair dryer. As the machine has 13 blades in the motor, the engineers were able to push on tone in the sound frequency and surrounded the motor with silencers causing the dryer to hardly make any noise. Sir James Dyson’s brief to the engineers was to create a hairdryer over which he could speak to his wife while she was drying her hair, and they achieved that! Having the motor positioned in the handle, reduces the weight of the hair dryer (weighing just 370g), don’t we all get our arms to ache with the top-heavy hair dryers?
“Trust me when I say there are many more approaches and angles to blow-drying than vacuuming in the world. British women want volume. Japanese women want straightness. No one wants hair damage. And then we had to create a fleet of robots specifically to test that over and over again.”

The company has spent around $71 millions to make this hair drying, and it has 600 prototypes produced, 100 patents that are pending and 103 engineers that worked on it. This brings me to the point that it is quite an expensive product, they will be selling at $400 but then again it isn’t like any other hair dryer and keeping you hair safe if worth it.

The Supersonic hair dryer has been launched in Japan, it will be available in the UK from June and will become available in the US later this fall, through Sephora.
