Fashion Show Themes Become High-Tech At Chanel SS17

The talk about fashion and technology has been increasing over the past few years and designers and brands have tried to tap into the digital-minded consumers. Earlier this year the Met Gala also had a tech related theme which was: “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology” (exploring the relationship between clothes created by hand versus the machine). During Paris Fashion Week we got to see some fashion show themes following this line too, Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel SS17 collection was named “Data Center Chanel”.

As the designer is known for transforming specific locations into his own Chanel land, he did just that once again. He transformed Paris’ Grand Palais into a computer lab/data center with multi-colored wiring, flashing lights, rows of shiny serves and circuit boards. The place was given a true Silicon Valley makeover: all brushed steel, smooth white surfaces, snaking coils of cables and flickering screens. The show opened with two models dressed as cyborgs in matching tweed suits in a white plastic robot mask, gloves and boots, setting the mood for the entire show. The show continued with Chanel’s famous muses like, Edie Campbell, Binx Walton, Soo-Joo Park and Arizona Muse. We saw the bouclé jackets and tweed twinsets in which the threads woven through the tweet looked like the colourful cables. The show was closed with clothes that were modernised, chiffon dresses and skirts were detailed with kaleidoscopic digital prints and neon patterns that reminded us of old-school screen savers. Fashion show themes are something everyone looks forward to and this year the French house definitely made it clear that they were getting down to being all digital.

The accessories we saw during the show were baseball hats worn like a skater-girl would wear one, at an angle. The 80s and 90d theme was kept alive in this show with chunky chain necklaces, oversized single earrings and fishnet stockings. Pearl necklaces an all time Chanel favourite were seen, along with robot-shaped handbags that lit up, chain-strapped evening bags and oversized clutches appeared as it they were ripped from a server panel and two-tone metallic flats or booties. Could Lagerfeld have hacked the difficulty of making tech products luxury? We will find out soon!

The clothes were classic Chanel: bouclé tweed suits worn shoulder-robed with flat boots, and silk tea dresses slit to the hip for this season’s on-trend flying panels, in circuit board prints. Not everything was hardware-inspired we saw some pretty feminine pieces like the lingerie-like slip dress trimmed with lace, ponchos and some ruffled separates. His two piece suits featured split A-line skirts and jackets with techy-looking tab fastenings, some of them had piped edges in a contrasting colour or sky-blue denim.

Fashion show themes are always a task but Chanel always seems to master it more than anyone else. It has been said that Karl Lagerfeld made many references in the show that many of us today would not remember, making this collection a nod to the millennials.
