How George Michael Majorly Influenced 90s Fashion & Style
The hugely influential British pop icon George Michael has passed away at the age of 53. His influence on pop has been immensely huge but he has also had a huge influence on fashion and style, especially the 90s fashion. His 1990 song “Freedom! ‘90” was one of his most well known music videos and one that is unforgettable. It was directed by David Fincher, styled by Camilla Nickerson and featured some of the top supermodels of the 1990s and it changed the way people saw women and fashion.
The video became an unforgettable moment in fashion-pop culture history. Supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Tatjana Patitz were all seen lip-synching his lyrics to his hit song. This was the time when George Michael was at the peak of his career and wanted to focus on writing, producing and performing which is why he decided not to appear in front of the camera for the video.
Michael saw the five models together on the January 1990 cover of British Vogue and that’s when he decided to include them in his video. While they were already famous models Michael knew that being part of this video would only serve to improve their careers and make their place as cultural influencers and that was exactly what happened. This was also a way to show everyone the way that women’s looks and bodies were being used by pop culture and the music industry. The models are seen walking across rooms in silk bedsheets, lying in bathtubs singing to the music in true 90s fashion and ever since it has gone down in both music and fashion history.

This music video has it all, it was stylish, engaging, sexy and had all the original supermodels who are known to have dominated the early 90s fashion in a way that has not been seen since. October marked the 26th anniversary of his huge hit “Freedom! ‘90.” and Vogue celebrated this anniversary by remaking the video with today’s supermodels! They made a modernised version of this iconic video with supermodels – Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, Anna Ewers, Irina Shayk, Taylor Hill, and more.
